- Amazon is selling a $90 women’s duck-down coat made by a company called Orolay, based in China.
- It has become a favorite of stylish shoppers in New York, according to The Strategist.
- It costs about one-tenth of the price of a Canada Goose down parka.
The Canada Goose parka has become the uniform of wealthy shoppers looking to survive a New York winter, but now there’s a new kid on the block.
A winter coat that costs $89.99 on Amazon is making the rounds among some of the city’s most stylish dressers and cropping up in New York’s notoriously wealthy Upper East Side neighborhood, New York magazine’s The Strategist blog reported.
“She said, ‘Oh, it’s an Amazon coat.’ I bought it,” Pimentel said. “Two weeks later, I went to a SoulCycle on 83rd and I was one of four people wearing it. And I think one of them was Lauren DuPont,” a socialite and creative consultant.
The coat, from a Chinese company called Orolay (you can also buy it on the company’s website for $79.99) is made with 90% duck-down filling – exactly what you would find in one of Canada Goose’s $800 (and up) parkas, though the quality may vary.
But if price-savvy consumers know they can pick up warm, good-quality coats at much lower prices, the thought of spending $800 on a Canada Goose parka is likely to become less appealing.
Skeptical shoppers have posted comments on the Orolay coat’s page on Amazon asking whether it’s actually warm enough to survive a brutal winter. It has more than 5,000 Amazon reviews.
“Is this coat capable of standing up to REAL winter weather?” one person wrote. “Talking sub-freezing, with sub-zero windchills and heavy snowfall.”
Another replied: “Yes! I wore it to MN and it was very warm since it is made of down it doesn’t let any heat out!”
Many have given it rave reviews.
“I absolutely LOVE this jacket,” one customer wrote. “Initially I was a bit skeptical but after reading other reviews I decided to purchase … I currently live in an area where the temperature reaches to the single digits/below zero and so far this jacket has kept me extremely warm and comfortable.”
