Some actors really do seem born to play certain roles.
In the case of “Game of Thrones,” just about every actor appears molded to his or her respective character. Can anyone brood better than Kit Harington? Could anyone else capture the range of emotions Tyrion has experienced in six seasons like Peter Dinklage?
Watching the audition tapes that have leaked online, it’s clear that these actors would land their “Game of Thrones” jobs because their portrayals were so instinctive.
Watch below to see the audition tapes of Natalie Dormer, Gwendoline Christie, Pedro Pascal, Rory McCann, and more.
Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark) and Maisie Williams (Arya Stark): The audition tapes of the girls who would become best friends and Stark sisters were edited so it seems like they’re reading lines with each other. Turner immediately captured young Sansa’s obsession with a privileged life (oh, how things have changed for her), and it’s fun to see Williams’ Arya only have to worry about mocking Sansa and not completing her hit list.
Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen): Khaleesi recalled her audition on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and how she did a dance mix of the “funky chicken” and the robot out of nerves.
Some videos on YouTube claim to be Clarke’s actual audition tape for “Game of Thrones,” when they actually show her audition for “Belle,” a period drama.
“Game of Thrones” released a supercut of the audition tapes of some of the show’s favorites, including Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) crushing the patriarchy, Rose Leslie (Ygritte) uttering her most famous line, Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell) getting seductive, and Kristofer Hivju (Tormund Giantsbane) perfectly capturing his Wildling spirit.
Leslie was probably able to nail her first “You know nothing, Jon Snow” because of her ignorance of the enormity of the show, according to her interview on “George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight.”
Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo): He immediately channeled the Dothraki warlord in his audition when he performed a haka, a type of ancient Māori war dance.
Rory McCann (The Hound): The bark in his audition tape at the one-minute mark makes it pretty obvious as to why McCann landed the role of Sandor Clegane.
Jack Gleeson (Joffrey Baratheon): He transformed so easily from nice guy to glaring villain that it makes it easier to see how Gleeson managed to play Joffrey for four seasons.
Miltos Yerolemou (Syrio Forel): Arya’s beloved sword fighting instructor was perfect from the start, and we lost him too soon.
Kit Harington (Jon Snow): The newly appointed King of the North came in a little bruised for his audition. At a McDonald’s the night before his audition, Harington got into a fight with a man who insulted his girlfriend at the time. Then he went in and read the iconic scene between Jon Snow and Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) in season one when Tyrion tells Jon to wear his bastard label “like armor.”
