Malaysia’s Musang King durians will soon be given QR codes to ensure their authenticity on the market.
Bernama reported on Wednesday (Dec 6) that the government was planning on implementing Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to differentiate the popular durian variety from others.
RFID had previously been implemented to authenticate swiftlet birds’ nests from Malaysia as well.
Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek was quoted by Bernama as saying that other varieties would also be given QR codes in future.
“(T)he public can scan the code using their mobile phones,” he said.
“In China, (where the Musang King is popular), the QR Code will make it easier to identify the durian’s country of origin… and authenticity,” he reportedly said during the question-and-answer session at the Dewan Negara on Tuesday.
