A young Spanish footballer died on Sunday after a penalty kick struck him in the chest and caused a cardiac arrest.
Eduardo Tirado Tabarez, 13, was representing Camas CF in a football tournament at the Municipal Sports Centre of Gines, which is near Seville.
Tabarez was taken to Virgen del Rocio Hospital but doctors were unable to save the teenager’s life.
“We want to convey our dismay and pain at the death of our child player Eduardo Tirado Tavare in Gines,” Camas CF said in a statement.
“Our most sincere condolences [go] to [the player’s] family and friends. We will always remember [Eduardo] and we will [remember him] for [his] humility, joy and great passion for football. Rest in peace.”
Tabarez’s death has shocked some in Spanish football. Real Madrid and Spain captain Sergio Ramos paid tribute to the teenager.

“My condolences to the relatives and friends of Eduardo Tirado, a child of Camas CF. RIP,” Ramos said.
