At its big event on Wednesday, Apple made some huge updates to the Apple TV, the set-top box that lets you stream live video through sources like Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Now.
“It really is the golden age of TV. But the experience hasn’t changed in decades. Today, we are going to do something about that,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said.
This is the first time Apple’s made any significant updates to its set-top box device in nearly three years, and it shows Apple’s serious about challenging the TV industry that Tim Cook once said was “stuck in the 70s.”
Here’s everything we’ve learned about the new Apple TV so far:
Price: The 32GB device is priced at $149 and the 64GB one will cost $199. That’s more than double the $69 price tag of the current version.Availability: It will be out in late October across 80 countries. It will be available in 100 countries by the end of the year. New remote with touch surface and Siri-support: You can tap and swipe the remote for search, and use Siri to find your favorite show, or even a specific episode you’re looking for. You can use Siri to filter your search based on cast, director, or genre. Even during the show, you can voice-search for sports scores or the cast of the show and get immediate results. Universal Search: You can use Siri to search for your favorite show across different sources, including Netflix, Hulu, and HBO Now. tvOS: A new operating system specifically designed for Apple TV. The tvOS is available starting from today. There are already over 11 million registered developers on Apple TV. Apple TV App Store: Similar to the App Store on the iOS, Apple TV will have its own store with apps specifically built on its platform. Airbnb, Zillow, MLB and Gilt have all built new apps designed specifically for the bigger screen experience on the TV. For example, with Gilt’s app, you can play a preview of certain products and see what they look like. On the MLB app, you can pull up a ton of live data, such as player stas, highlights, and scores of other games, instantly. If you buy one app, you’ll have it on your iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Games specifically designed for Apple TV: You can play games directly on Apple TV using the new remote. Big game makers like Activision are creating games specifically designed for Apple TV. Some even allows for multiplaying. Other features: 64-bit A8 chip, Bluetooth 4.0, HDMI, Ethernet code. The remote uses Bluetooth and can last 3 months on a single charge.
