Black Friday is officially over – here’s the lowdown on how Singaporeans shopped

It looks like the Black Friday craze has made its way to Singapore.

And while some shoppers hit the streets to form lines outside their favourite stores even before the sales began, others took to their keyboards at the stroke of midnight.

In fact, online shopping aggregator iPrice group found that there was a huge surge in Google searches for e-commerce sites at midnight on Nov 24.

A large proportion of shoppers also decided to get in on the action in the morning, and right before the sales came to a close on Nov 25.

Many of Singapore’s deal hunters turned to Amazon and Lazada, with Lazada generating the highest search interest when the clock stuck midnight on Black Friday.

But after a tough battle between the two leading e-commerce sites throughout the day,  Amazon claimed the overall top spot on Google Trends with the highest average search interest.

Zalora leapfrogged its way into the top six on Black Friday, possibly due to its successful promotional efforts.

But it wasn’t just the popular e-commerce sites that saw a surge in interest during Black Friday this year. A larger number of shoppers were using coupon sites as well.

According to Black-Friday.Sale, a platform that is owned by the same parent company as Cuponation, the shopping event increased in popularity among Singaporeans in the past year.

The company saw an increase in the size of shoppers’ baskets on the Cuponation Singapore site from Black Friday this year compared to last year.

When looking at the electronics and phones category, the average basket size increased from S$85.31 to S$99.42, while it increased from S$54.57 to S$89.87 in the beauty, health and wellness category.

In a press statement, Black-Friday.Sale Asia Pacific and Eastern Europe Managing Director Igor Shapiro said: “Black Friday is gaining momentum and popularity in Southeast Asia, especially in Singapore”.

“We noticed that by the year more consumers are hunting for the best discounts to fulfill their shopping needs”.
