One doctor is dead and several others are “fighting for their lives” after a gunman opened fire inside a New York City hospital Friday afternoon before fatally shooting himself, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
Seven victims at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center were shot altogether, New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill told reporters. Five were “seriously injured” and one suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.
The shooter was a former employee of the hospital, where the shooting occurred, city officials confirmed. He apparently attempted to set himself on fire before shooting himself, O’Neill said.
News outlets citing law enforcement officials have identified the suspected shooter as 45-year-old Henry Bello.
Police described him as wearing a blue shirt and white lab coat concealing a long gun, the New York Times reported.
De Blasio described the shooting as a “tragedy,” but said it was a “workplace-related” incident and not an act of terrorism.
“This was a horrific situation unfolding in the middle of a place that people associate with care and comfort,” de Blasio told reporters. “A situation that came out of nowhere.”
Police have warnedresidents to avoid the area around the hospital.
