Deprived of mobile data? Survey shows half of Singaporean consumers can only last one day without it

  • 1 in 2 consumers exceeded their monthly mobile data limits at least once in the last six months and of this number, 24% exceeded it by at least 3GB.
  • The most frequently used mobile app each day was WhatsApp (58%), followed by Facebook (37.5%) and YouTube (24%).
  • 66.7% felt they needed more than 6GB of mobile data a month to never worry about reaching their data limit.
  • Only 52.9% are able to always stay within their limits over the past 6 months.

Are you guilty of always reaching your mobile data limit before the month is up? Frustrated with your low data capped phone plans?

You’re not alone, because two in three Singaporeans say they need at least 6GB of mobile data a month when the average user gets only between 3.5GB to 4GB.

The data is according to a survey commissioned by Circles.Life, Singapore’s fourth mobile operator which was launched in May last year.

Conducted by research firm Survey Sampling International (SSI), the Circles.Life Annual Mobile Data Usage Survey 2017 analysed mobile data usage habits of over 900 Singaporean consumers aged 16 to 54.

It found that half of respondents said they would only be able to last a day without using mobile data.

Those polled indicated that their most used app each day was Whatsapp (58%), followed by Facebook (37.5%) and YouTube (24%). Dating apps were the least frequently used mobile apps.

In addition, one in two surveyed said they exceeded their monthly data limits at least once in the last six months and of this number, 24% exceeded it by at least 3GB.

In a press release, Mr Rameez Ansar, co-founder and director of Circles.Life said: “Findings of the survey are consistent with our internal market research, where we have discovered that consumers in Singapore needed more data, but did not have affordable access to it.

“After we launched our 20GB for $20 data Data Plus option in March, we saw a huge spike in the data usage of our subscribers to the current average of 8GB per month, more than double of the current industry usage.

“Singapore consumers are hungry for more mobile data and we expect that demand to grow as a nation.”

In conjunction with National Day 2017, Circles.Life is offering a free upgrade to its no-contract mobile plan for new subscribers.

For the month of August, new subscribers to the operator will enjoy the 20GB for $20 Data Plus option for free.

“We want consumers to experience what it really feels like to stop budgeting data. When you have so much data, you can live your digital life to the fullest – without constantly worrying about busting monthly data caps, and incurring excess fees” added Mr Ansar in the statement.
