One billion people now use Facebook’s chat app Messenger every month, the company announced on Wednesday.
That makes Messenger the fourth Facebook product to enter the elite “1,000,000,000 club,” along with the company’s other chat app, WhatsApp; Groups; and the main social network, which actually gets more than 1 billion users every day.
Over the past several years, Messenger has evolved from a simple chat app to a full-fledged platform that lets people send one another money, make phone calls, request an Uber ride, or order flowers.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said the business potential of a product doesn’t become “interesting” until the product gains 1 billion users. Now that Messenger has done that, we can expect Wall Street to grill execs about it even more than usual when the company has its second-quarter earnings call on July 27.
