Grab collaborates with Disney to gamify its app through Star Wars: The Last Jedi promo


Star Wars fans would have noticed a notification on their Grab app over the past couple of days asking them to choose a side – The Resistance or The First Order.

In the lead up to the release of the latest Star Wars blockbuster on Dec 14, Asian ride-hailing giant Grab has collaborated with The Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia to not just introduce elements of the movie to its app but gamify its commuters’ experience.

The campaign is extended to Grab users across Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam and will last for five weeks.

Riders who opt-in will see their Grab app reskin to their chosen side, and their GrabCar icons transformed into either Tie Silencers or A-Wings.

GrabCars are suddenly transformed into TIE Silencers or A-Wings.

Through points on GrabRewards, riders will be able to redeem Star Wars exclusives like notebooks, tote bags and drink tumblers.

There’ll also be tickets to a private movie screening of The Last Jedi, along with what Grab calls “weekly battles” between The Resistance and The First Order.

This may be in the form of in-app quizzes where prizes such as Sphero Droids and Lego sets can be won by the winning side.

Top riders from the two sides will also compete to win the grand prize of an all-expense-paid trip for two to the world’s largest privately-owned Star Wars memorabilia museum, Rancho Obi-Wan, in San Francisco.

The date and location for this final round of “on-ground battle” competition will be revealed later.
