Grab is launching a new service allowing users to pay for street-hailed taxi rides via the mobile app.
The beta version of GrabNow will be progressively rolled out in Singapore this week, and will allow Grab customers who flagged down GrabTaxis to accumulate GrabRewards points with their payments.
Participating GrabTaxi drivers can be identified by a GrabNow decal displayed in their vehicles.
“With GrabNow, our customers can enjoy the best of both worlds – the immediacy of street hailing as well as all the benefits of the Grab app, including cashless payments, GrabRewards points and best-in-class safety standards,” Melvin Vu, head of GrabTaxi Singapore said.
According to Grab, once the GrabNow option is selected, the rider’s mobile app will be linked to the driver’s in no more than ten seconds.
Once successfully registered as a GrabTaxi ride, the rider will be able to pay using Grab’s in-app payment feature or by cash.
An electronic receipt will be sent to the rider at the end of the trip.
The Singapore company also said it will be introducing an Instant Cash Out feature to reduce payment processing time. This feature will allow taxi drivers to instantly transfer fares collected via GrabPay into their bank accounts.
While it is only applicable to drivers with POSB or DBS accounts at the moment, Grab says it is planning to to allow drivers with accounts from other banks to use it as well.
Vu explained that many taxi drivers are hesitant to accept cashless payments due to the extra processing time. The new feature, he says, “will encourage taxi drivers to embrace the convenience of cashless payment, and bring more taxi-drivers into the cashless society”.
To encourage users to try GrabNow, a special $1 discount will be given with the promo code “GrabNow” for all GrabNow payments from Aug 7 to Sept 30.
