Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? Which may be why Kim Kardashian West’s ex-boyfriend Ray J is wading into criminal justice in hopes of getting his friend, rap mogul Suge Knight, out of prison.

According to a report from Daily Mail TV, the 38-year-old “Love & Hip Hop” star is in “secret talks” with the Trump administration over Marion “Suge” Knight’s conviction.

Knight, 54, was sentenced to 28 years in prison in 2018 for manslaughter in the death of his friend Terry Carter, who was killed in a hit-and-run incident on the set of the movie “Straight Outta Compton” in 2015. Another man, Cole “Bone” Sloan, was injured in the incident. Knight, the former Death Row Records co-founder, had pleaded no contest in the case.

Knight was originally sentenced to 11 years in prison, but it was doubled due to the state’s three-strikes law and Knight’s prior convictions, which include felony armed robbery and assault with a gun. He faced an additional six years for a deadly weapon allegation involving the truck he used.

An insider close to Ray J told Daily Mail TV that the singer hopes Knight will be pardoned.

“Ray J is very competitive and always has been. He saw what Kim was able to do with her work in the criminal justice system with the Trump administration and he is determined to show he can do the same,” the source told Daily Mail TV. “He’s adamant that he can convince Trump to pardon Suge and that people will respect him for doing so.”

The insider was referencing Kardashian West’s long history of criminal justice reform and her lobbying for the release of multiple people from prison.

She played a role in the release of Cyntoia Brown, a sex trafficking victim who killed a man who hired her for sex when she was a teenager, and Alice Johnson, who was convicted of drug trafficking in 1996. She also helped secure the early release of Momolu Stewart.

Knight has a decades-long history of felony convictions. In 1996 he spent nearly five years in prison for beating a rival rapper with Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas, Nevada. Six years later he was jailed for violating his probation. He returned to jail in 2003 after punching a Hollywood nightclub’s parking lot attendant. He was arrested on an outstanding warrant during a traffic stop in 2003. In 2014, he was charged with robbery. In 2015 he was arrested in connection with Carter’s death. Prosecutors also accused him of bribing witnesses during the Carter trial.

A source told Daily Mail TV that Ray J’s reps are worried about him meeting President Donald Trump.

“The people around Ray J keep telling him that the fallout with African Americans for meeting with Trump could be catastrophic to his career. Especially if he shows up at a political rally,” the insider said.
