You may remember her as Barbarella or Lulu from The Noose.
Or perhaps as the fiesty ‘Ah Lian’ who got locked up in the fictional Litchfield Penitentiary in promotional trailer videos for the hit Netflix series, Orange Is The New Black.
But it looks like Michelle Chong has now brought her ‘Ah Lian’ character out of prison, and onto the floors of a RedMart warehouse.
The Singaporean host, actress, and TV director has been cast as RedMart’s newest picker in the online supermarket’s latest campaign, “Fresher Than You Think”.
And she will be featured in two video clips titled “Get Fresh with Ah Lian” and “FRESH Key Visuals” on Facebook and YouTube.
The campaign is aimed at providing consumers with a look behind the scenes into how RedMart picks and delivers fresh produce, and how it maintains the temperatures of its produce and other frozen items for delivery.
“Get Fresh with Ah Lian” was posted on Facebook on Oct 17, while “FRESH Key Visuals” will be released on Oct 24. The former has already garnered over 479,000 views and 5,300 shares across RedMart’s and Michelle Chong’s Facebook pages.

The Ah Lian character that Chong portrayed in her videos was a “perfect match” for the concept and storyline of RedMart’s videos, Mr Jean Thomas, marketing director at RedMart, told Marketing.
He added that the company chose Chong because of her audience reach and brand appeal to the Singapore public.
An ‘Ah Lian’ as a RedMart picker?
We can’t think of a better way to showcase RedMart’s uniquely Singaporean personality.
Other than the videos, the campaign will also feature a series of message visuals on its web and app store that illustrates how the online supermarket conducts its picking, temperature management, time and handling of products.
