- The New England Patriots traded Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2018 second-round pick. The deal comes as a surprise because the Patriots reportedly viewed Garoppolo as their future quarterback. The 49ers now have a future franchise quarterback of their own.
The New England Patriots have traded backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers in a surprising move, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The 49ers are sending a 2018 second-round draft pick in exchange, according to Schefter.
Schefter reported that the Patriots and 49ers began discussing trades around Garoppolo on Monday morning and agreed to the deal by Monday night.
The deal comes after months of speculation about Garoppolo’s future. Garoppolo will be a free agent after this season, and though it was reported the Patriots viewed him as a future franchise quarterback, there have been no signs of Tom Brady, at 40, slowing down.
Figuring out Garoppolo’s future would have been tricky and awkward. How much would the Patriots pay Garoppolo to be a backup to Brady for more years? Would Garoppolo be okay staying behind Brady for several more years, even as he enters his prime? How would Brady feel about the Patriots making a long-term financial commitment to Garoppolo? It’s unlikely all three parties could have found a solution that satisfied everyone.
The timing nonetheless comes as a surprise. Garoppolo has been one of the hottest commodities since starting two games last season during Brady’s suspension and looking like a more-than-competent starting quarterback. Teams like the Cleveland Browns reportedly called the Patriots about Garoppolo before the draft, but the Patriots would not move him. It’s unclear if the Patriots ever received an offer greater than a second-round pick.
The 49ers, meanwhile, satisfy their need for a quarterback after cycling through Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard this season. The Niners likely made the move with the idea of re-signing Garoppolo this offseason to be their franchise quarterback.
And the Patriots have made a resounding commitment to the quarterback they already have – Brady.
