Kevin Carter, a 54-year-old priest from Little Ferry, New Jersey, was arrested on Friday after he reportedly threatened an 8-year-old boy with a musket last month, according to NBC 4 New York.
Carter, a New York Giants fan, was reportedly angry that the young boy was planning to root for the Dallas Cowboys in a game against the Giants later in the day.
Carter allegedly pointed the firearm at the child and threatened to shoot him.
Carter approached the child before services at St. Margaret of Cortona Roman Catholic Church on Sunday, September 13, and asked him to enter one of the church’s rectory rooms, NBC reports.
Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli told NBC, “As he raised his weapon and pointed it at the boy, he said, ‘I’m going to shoot you.'”
It was a witness at the church who contacted Newark Archdiocese officials on September 25. The Archdiocese contacted the prosecutor’s office three days later.
“There’s no such thing as joking around with a weapon when you’re dealing with an 8-year-old kid,” Molinelli added.
Carter is being held on $15,000 bail. He is facing charges of endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated assault.
The Giants lost to the Cowboys 27-26.
