R&B singer R. Kelly’s attorneys want a Chicago judge to fine and jail the singer’s ex-wife, Andrea Kelly, on the grounds that she broke a confidentiality clause stemming from their 2009 divorce agreement.
In a Tuesday filing, Kelly’s attorney Steve Greenburg argued that Kelly violated the clause by “appearing on countless media outlets disparaging Robert Kelly and making accusations and charges involving Robert,” according to The Chicago Sun-Times. Andrea Kelly was married to the singer, whose full name is Robert Kelly, between 1996 and 2009.
Kelly currently faces more than 20 charges for alleged sexual abuse and assault stemming from incidents between 1998 and 2010. He has denied all of the accusations against him.
Greenburg wrote in the filing, reviewed by the Sun-Times, that Andrea Kelly profited from denigrating her ex-husband in the media. In the Lifetime docuseries “Surviving R. Kelly,” she accused the singer of abuse and manipulation during their marriage.
“I went to the National Domestic Violence awareness hotline. And there’s 17 questions. There was only two things on that list that Robert hadn’t done to me,” she said during the docuseries. “And that’s when it became real to me, like ‘Drea, you’re being abused.'”
Greenburg noted that she has also appeared on the television show “Growing Up Hip Hop,” and has partaken in dozens of interviews.
“She should further be required to disclose each and every appearance she has made where she has discussed Robert Kelly, divulge all income earned as a result thereof, be fined by this court an amount equal to or in excess of the amount she has earned from a breach of the agreement, and jailed,” Greenberg wrote.
Alison Motta, Andrea Kelly’s attorney, told the Sun-Times that R. Kelly has broken the confidentiality agreement on numerous occasions over the years by talking about the couple’s marriage.
“There is nothing that’s confidential anymore,” Motta said. “Now he’s trying to punish her for forcing him to comply with his financial obligations. It’s just another attempt to punish and control her, this time from afar.”
R. Kelly spent three nights in jail earlier this year after failing to pay $161,000 in child support to Andrea Kelly. During an explosive March interview with CBS’s Gayle King, the singer denied all of his ex-wife’s abuse accusations.
The next hearing for his case is July 10.
