A suspect was shot and killed by a police SWAT team responding to reports of a potential active shooter and hostage situation at a Walmart in Amarillo, Texas.
The hostages inside the store were all reported to be safe. The investigation of the incident is ongoing.
The Amarillo Police Department has confirmed that there are no gunshot victims, and noted earlier that there was “no shooting ongoing at this moment.” The police said that the incident “appears to be a workplace violence type event.”
Pedestrians were urged to avoid the area.
Early reports gave conflicting information on the identity of the shooter and the content of the calls to police.
ABC 7 also reported that police had evacuated people from the west side of the building.
Walmart provided a statement on the incident:
As soon as we heard about the situation at our store in Amarillo, Texas, we acted immediately. All customers and our two associates who were held hostage are safe. This was a very difficult situation and we are thankful for the quick response from law enforcement.
BuzzFeed News reported that the police claimed to have received reports of gunshots, while one release by police said that the reports were of “an armed subject … who may have hostages.” Police later said that they could not confirm the exact nature of the reports.
