The most expensive iPhone model ever

Apple’s three new iPhone models — the XS Max, XS and XR — are officially here and the XS Max costs a whopping S$2,349 (US$1,711)  for the top-end 512GB version, $2,039 (256GB) and $1,799 for the 64GB variant.

That makes the iPhone XS Max the most expensive iPhone model so far.

The iPhone XS costs $2,199 for its top-end 512GB version and the iPhone XR costs $1,469 for the 256GB version.

The XS Max and XS iPhone models will be available in Singapore on Sept 21, while pre-orders of the iPhone XR start on Oct 19.

Are they worth your money? We’ve rounded up the phones’ new features here.

Screens larger than before

Firstly, if you like mobile phones with huge screens, the iPhone XS Max is perfect for you.

Not only is it the most expensive iPhone to date, but it is also the largest, with a 6.5-inch screen. iPhone XS Max’s screen size has overtaken Samsung Galaxy Note 9’s screen size of 6.4 inches.

The iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch screen and the iPhone XR has a 6.1-inch screen.

However, there is bad news for you if your hands are too small.

With the introduction of these three new iPhones, Apple has announced the discontinuation of iPhone SE that has a 4-inch screen.

Feminists are criticising Apple for creating new iPhones that are ‘too big’ for the average female hand.

Bye bye, home button

Bid goodbye to iPhone’s iconic home button, as all three models feature full-screen designs without the home button. They use only face recognition technology, or Face ID, for user authentication.

Of course, this has met with backlash. It is a bold move by Apple, considering many iPhone users are still very used to the touch button, or Touch ID’s fingerprint authentication. If you are are one of those users, you might not want to buy these new iPhones.

Photo-editing features like never before

This next new feature is for all the photography buffs and Instagram-users.

During the launch of these new iPhones on Sept 12, Apple said that the iPhones have a new A12 Bionic chip in each of them.

Apple claims it is a breakthrough in photography because it is possible to adjust depth-of-field of images even AFTER you have taken them.

This is simply done in the photos app. Press edit and a slider at the bottom called depth will pop up, allowing you to adjust accordingly. This is just one of the many new features.

Apart from the new photo-editing feature, the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max have slightly better screens, some improved water resistance, all-new image sensors of rear dual-camera system, improved TrueDepth camera systems for advanced Face ID among the improvements.

Also, Apple claimed that the new iPhones load faster with their new A12 Bionic processor.

The differences among the three

The iPhone XR features the same design and processor as the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, but comes with a cheaper LCD screen that has less contrast and dynamic range as well as less power efficiency, compared to the Oled screens of the XS and XS Max.

The cheaper iPhone XR has only a single rear camera, unlike the rear dual-camera system of the iPhone XS and XS Max.

Both the iPhone XS and XS Max will be available in silver, space grey and gold.

However, the iPhone XR comes in more fun colours, including red, blue, yellow, black and white.
