Trump reportedly told the Pentagon to increase the defense budget to $750 billion after saying he would cut spending by 5%
After announcing plans to cut military spending, President Trump has reportedly asked Jim Mattis to prepare a $750 billion budget proposal for 2020.
A new report ranked the military power of 136 countries, taking into account 55 facets of conventional power. These are the 25 most powerful.
There are a number of ways to gauge an individual military's assets and capabilities, but making head-to-head comparisons is a bit tougher.
Global military spending reached $1.739 trillion in 2017, up 1.1% from 2016. "In 2017 the USA spent more on its military than the next seven highest-spending countries combined," according to SIPRI.
Arms and armaments are not the only things that make countries military powerhouses.
Germany is debating whether and how to boost its defense budget, while the US and others are warning it not to let NATO down.
"I believe we're going to be fighting from space in a matter of years," the Air Force's chief of staff said in February.
Such a move would require — and is unlikely to get — legislative approval.
The Air Force is looking to save money on the new Air Force Ones, but legislators don't appear to be on board with all of the cost-saving measures.
The House Armed Services Committee included money to keep the A-10 in the air in its 2018 Defense Authorization Act.
