A police officer was shot and killed on Monday evening at the Texas Tech University campus police headquarters in Lubbock, prompting the school to be placed on lockdown, the Associated Press reported.
The shooting suspect was captured at the Jones AT&T Stadium after fleeing on foot, police officials said.
University spokesman Chris Cook said that police were making a student welfare check when they found evidence of drugs inside the suspect’s room.
Officers brought the suspect to the police station when he took out a gun and shot the officer in the head.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott offered condolences to the family of the slain officer in a statement late Monday night, calling the officer’s death a “heartbreaking tragedy.”
