In August 2015, Netflix made a huge announcement – the company’s new moms and dads can take off as much time as they want during the first year after their child’s birth or adoption.
By announcing this policy, Netflix not only joined the ranks of several major companies, but it also led the way for many more that have instituted radical parental leave policies at odds with the country’s lack of mandatory paid parental leave.
While US policymakers have been slow to acknowledge the benefits of guaranteeing paid time spent with a new child, companies like Netflix say they want their employees to be able to balance the needs of their growing families without worrying about work or finances.
“Experience shows people perform better at work when they’re not worrying about home,” Tawni Cranz, Netflix’s chief talent officer, wrote on Netflix’s blog. “This new policy, combined with our unlimited time off, allows employees to be supported during the changes in their lives and return to work more focused and dedicated.”
Here are some companies that are making life for new parents that much better with generous parental leave policies:

New parents at Netflix take as much paid parental leave as needed for up to one year after the birth or adoption of a new child, and they can choose to return full-time, part-time, and take additional time off as needed.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Employees at the largest private foundation in the world can enjoy up to one year of paid time with their newborns during the child’s first year after birth or adoption.
“This will enable parents to participate more fully in their children’s lives, while also allowing them the flexibility and financial certainty to meet the needs of their growing families,” Steven Rice, the foundation’s chief human resources officer, writes in a statement posted on LinkedIn.
Regardless of gender, birthing means, or country of residence, all employees are eligible for 26 weeks of fully paid leave that can be taken over the two years following the birth or adoption of a child.
“Many traditional parental leave policies don’t treat people equally, including single parents, adoptive parents, and parents who use surrogates,” the company’s director of culture and engagement, Juliet Gorman, says. “While we recognize the unique toll of giving birth, we believe that all members of a family benefit from generous, inclusive leave.”
Adobe offers 26 weeks of paid maternity leave and 16 weeks of paid paternity leave for birth and adoptive parents.
“We join an industry movement to better support our employees while striving towards increased workforce diversity,” writes Donna Morris, Adobe’s SVP of people and places, on Adobe’s official blog.

New parents at Facebook and Instagram can take 17 weeks of paid parental leave, which can be used all at once or spread out during the course of a year.
“I say this all the time, but, at least in my perspective, I think it’s one of the best benefits that Facebook offers,” Adam Isserlis, a manager of corporate communications at Facebook who took leave following the birth of his daughter in December 2013, tells Business Insider.
“I know of people that have two or three days off, or a week off, and then they have to go back to work while they’re still learning how to be a parent,” he says. “And I’m not saying that you learn how to be a parent in a month or four months, but you certainly learn more than you do in a week or two days.”

Birth mothers at Google receive 18 weeks of fully-paid leave, while primary caregivers receive 12 weeks and other caregivers receive seven. This leave not only includes full pay but also stock vesting and benefits.

All full-time US employees, regardless of gender or birthing means, are eligible for 20 weeks of fully-paid parental leave.
“We’re removing traditional gender and family stereotypes by extending our leave benefits to all parents, no matter the form parenthood takes,” Jeffrey Siminoff, Twitter’s VP of inclusion and diversity, tells Business Insider. “Our benefits and culture are designed to help lessen the challenges all new parents face and broaden the reach of who’s covered.”

Parents can get 12 weeks of fully-paid leave. Birth moms get an additional eight weeks of fully-paid leave, and if the birth mother chooses, she has the option of going on short-term disability for the two weeks before her due date. Microsoft employees can also choose to take 12-week parental leave either all at once or in spurts.
“These changes are in direct support of the culture we aspire to have – one that allows people to build meaningful careers,” writes Microsoft Executive VP Kathleen Hogan in a blog post announcing the changes.

Expectant mothers receive eight weeks of maternity leave at full pay. They can also take an additional eight weeks of paid bonding leave for a total of 16 weeks leave. Fathers, same-sex spouses, and domestic partners also are eligible for the new bonding benefit.
Johnson & Johnson
The healthcare company offers 17 weeks of paid maternity leave and 8 weeks of leave for fathers and adoptive parents, according to Fairygodboss.
Birth and non-birth parents that have completed six months of service at Square are eligible for up to 16 weeks of fully-paid leave to care for a newborn, recently adopted child, or a new foster child, according to Fairygodboss.

New parents at Reddit can take 16 weeks of paid leave during the first year after the birth or adoption of a child. This time must be taken in a minimum of two-week intervals.
Bank of America

Bank of America offers up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave and allows another 14 unpaid weeks for new parents.
EY (formerly Ernst & Young)
Men and women welcoming a child through birth, adoption, surrogacy, foster care or legal guardianship in the US are eligible for up to 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
“Traditional gender responsibilities at work and home are evolving and resulting in the need for more progressive parental leave policies to better support women and men in the workplace,” says Karyn Twaronite, EY global diversity&inclusiveness officer. “With this in mind, we’ve expanded our parental leave benefits to enable all of our people to have the flexibility they need to manage their family needs, career demands and transitions, while continuing to experience dynamic career opportunities and development.”

The online retailer offers 20 weeks of paid leave to new birth mothers and six weeks to other parents, including fathers.
Parents at Amazon can share up to six weeks of their parental leave with a partner who doesn’t have paid leave through his or her employer. This program means Amazon employees can return to work – and go back to receiving their regular base pay – but still receive parental leave pay while their partner takes the helm at home.
The company’s “Ramp Back Program” also allows birth mothers and primary caregivers eight weeks of flexible time upon returning to work.

Yahoo offers up to eight weeks paid leave for any Yahoo employee that has a new child while employed at Yahoo. Birth mothers can receive up to an additional eight weeks paid leave.
Arnold & Porter
Primary caregivers at Arnold & Porter can receive up to 18 weeks of fully paid leave, which secondary caregivers receive up to six weeks.
The professional services company offers up to sixteen weeks of paid maternity leave for birth mothers in the US, as well as up to eight weeks of paid time off for other primary caregivers and two weeks of paid time off for secondary caregivers, including adoptive parents and parents using a surrogate, according to Fairygodboss.

Spotify offers six months of fully-paid parental leave to all full-time employees globally. Parents can take the leave at one time or spread it out in three sections over three years.
