Everton forward Wayne Rooney has been charged with drink driving, according to multiple reports.
The 31-year-old, who recently retired from international football, was pulled over by Cheshire Police on Thursday evening while behind the wheel of a Volkswagen Beetle at 2 a.m local time.
A spokeswoman for Cheshire police initially told Business Insider that they had no comment to make.
However, a later statement read: “Cheshire police has charged a man with drink-driving following a vehicle stop in Wilmslow.
“The man was arrested shortly after 2:00am today, Friday 1 September, after officers stopped a black VW Beetle on Altrincham Road, Wilmslow.
“Wayne Rooney has since been charged with driving whilst over the prescribed limit. Rooney has been released on bail and is due to appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on September 18.”
Rooney re-joined his boyhood football club Everton after a decorated 13-year stay at Manchester United. He has scored two goals from his first three Premier League games for Everton this season.
Business Insider contacted Everton for comment.
