It seems like we are moving full speed ahead to becoming a cashless society as yet another e-payment system is introduced in stores.

WeChat Pay is one of the leading mobile payment solutions in China with hundreds of millions of active monthly users. And now, it has announced its first mall partnership in Singapore, with Capitaland Malls’ Bugis+ and Bugis Junction.

The cashless payment system which comes as a part of China’s popular WeChat messaging app will allow for both Tencent and the malls to better target Chinese tourists, an important demographic in Singapore’s tourism sector.

WeChat Pay will be rolled out across retail and F&B outlets, including Ajisen Ramen, Bossini, Etude House, Hua Wei, PUMA and Yishion. To promote the launch, shoppers that use WeChat Pay at the malls during Sept 21 to Dec 31 will be given cashback coupons and virtual money packets.

The launch of the campaign this week coincides with China’s Golden Week holidays from Oct 1 to Oct 7.

According to the China National Tourism Administration, 593 million Chinese travelled during the Golden Week holiday in 2016.
