A police officer in London shot himself in the foot in the early hours of Thursday morning in an operation gone wrong.
The unnamed officer accidentally discharged his weapon into his own foot just after 4 a.m. as he was leaving a house in west London, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
The officer was one of a group who had been dispatched to a property in Acton in the early hours of Thursday morning.
They were carrying out what police described as “a welfare check.”
The statement said: “After completing the call and leaving the address, a police firearm was discharged by one of the officers causing an injury to his foot.”
The officer was taken to hospital. His injury has been described as “not life-threatening.”
Officials at the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards are investigating the incident.
Only a minority of police in the UK carry firearms.
Those who do are highly trained and only deployed when police believe lethal force could be necessary.
The Met Police did not offer further details on how the misfiring occurred.
