I’m completely obsessed with the delicious burgers and fries.
One summer, I consistently worked six days a week and was still excited for my burger every day.
Here’s why In-N-Out is the best fast-food chain in America.
The food is always fresh.
The potatoes are peeled and sliced right in the kitchen, the tomatoes are sliced by the hour, lettuce is prepared constantly, and the meat is never frozen. I can tell you from personal experience that if the lettuce is slightly darker, it’s thrown out. If a tomato is bruised, they toss it. These ingredients get delivered every other day, so nothing is ever old. You can definitely taste it in the quality.
Even though the menu is simple, there are a lot of different ways to switch up your burger.
For a while, I would get the same burger every time – a hamburger, animal style, no tomato. I started to get tired of eating the same meal almost every day, and that’s when I decided to be adventurous. Add mustard, ketchup, chilis, raw onion, whole grilled onion, protein style – there are so many variations of an In-N-Out burger.
One day you can get a cheeseburger with ketchup instead of spread, raw onions, and no tomato – the next day, get a protein style (lettuce wrapped, no bun) double-single (two pieces of meat and one slice of cheese) with chilis, and it will taste completely different. You can even mix up how the fries taste by getting animal style or cheese fries. The “not-so-secret” menu is full of delicious ways to change up your burger.
There are no secrets …
Unlike other fast food establishments, at every In-N-Out, you can see how the food is being made. The kitchen is wide open for customers to watch their beautiful burgers and delicious french fries be cooked step-by-step. The customers see what the employees see. This builds trust between the workers and the customers.
… except for the famous spread.
The spread is In-N-Out’s famous secret sauce. It is so secret, in fact, that I am still unaware of the recipe. It’s made ready-to-eat for every store, so no In-N-Out restaurant actually prepares the spread in-house. It’s a mystery to everyone.
The recipe is something you cannot copy.
Even if you tried, you could not find another place that would have the exact recipe for the spread or even the fries. It’s been a while since I’ve eaten this delicious meal (seven months to be exact), and I recently thought it would be a good idea to try to make homemade spread. Let’s just say it was awful. The fact that you simply cannot copy the flavor makes the food unique.
The customers are always enthusiastic.
The hardcore, loyal In-N-Out customers are always excited about their burgers. Watching their faces light up when they saw their burgers that I had just prepared was a great feeling. Having customers come up to you and tell you how much they enjoyed their meals was always the second highlight of my workdays – the first, obviously, was the burger.
Next time I fly home to California, this will be my very first stop.
